The Uplands

Sheltered in the northeast of Oak Bay, the Uplands is home to upscale estates highlighted with heritage turn-of-the-century homes, which have been exalted as some of the most expensive in Canada. This wealthy neighbourhood was designed in the early 20th century as a garden suburb, which has allowed for the richness of its Garry oak ecosystem originally tended for thousands of years by the Lekwungen-speaking peoples.

Quiet and private, with rich seaside trails that wind through Uplands Park, combined with kilometres of coastline, residents find it easy to maintain a peaceful yet active and fulfilling lifestyle. Proximity to the University of Victoria is a bonus, as is the ability to play golf on two nearby courses — one of which is spread right on the oceanfront. This and more is what makes the homes for sale in Uplands some of the best!

About The Uplands

Climate

Moderated by the great Pacific Ocean, the Uplands gets little to no snow, and residents are often seen enjoying the beaches in midwinter. The oceanside climate is also a winning factor during summertime. While much of interior B.C. fairs through sweltering heat and forest-fire smoke, the mediterranean-like coastal climate receives a naturally cool air conditioning. Nestled in the rain shadow South Vancouver island gets 2.5x less rain than Vancouver which is only 60km away.

History

The Uplands was an important place long inhabited by the Songhees who had numerous villages there. Scottish horse ranchers Dawson Turner and John A. Robert came to Uplands from Alberta in 1907, buying the entire area for $275,000. The designer who they hired to lead the Uplands development was John Omsted, who was renowned in his day for landscape architecture across North America. The winding streets and estate-sized lots, set with immaculate gardens, which retain the expression of the Garry oak woodlands, is a testament to Olmsted’s vision.

Uplands Amenities

Parks & Recreation

Uplands Park - Uplands park is a rare undeveloped 30-hectare expanse in the heart of the Uplands. Woodland trails beneath gangling arms of rare old-growth Garry Oaks lead into stretches of meadow, beautiful for day and moonlit walks. Current efforts are underway to restore the purple camas flowers, a dietary staple of the Coast Salish for millenia. The elevated rocky areas provide great places for family picnics.

Cattle Point - Across Dallas Road from Uplands Park, Cattle Point Urban Star Park is a great destination to connect with the marine ecosystem of the Salish Sea as well as the night sky. Thanks in great part to citizen-led groups like Friends of Uplands Park, the ecologically rich tidal pools of Cattle Point have been protected and restored, and provide a source of endless curiosity at low tide. The park’s unique buffer from the city’s light pollution makes it a prime location for observing the night skies as well. It’s a great spot to birdwatch, dip your feet in the water, and catch some sunset views of the great Olympic Mountains.

Willows Beach - Willows Beach lies just south of Cattle Point. Its esplanade provides a spot to park just feet from the sandy shore, and residents are often seen grabbing fish and chips in Estevan Village and walking down for midday or sunset picnics. Kids can keep themselves entertained at the nearby playground, and the concession has snacks to keep everyone’s needs satisfied.

Uplands Golf Club - A world-class golf course in a world-class location, the Uplands Golf Club is one of four private golf clubs in the Capital Regional District. Member residents love the ability to golf 18 holes on 120 acres at any time of the year.

Henderson Recreation Centre - A hub for fitness and recreation in the Henderson area, the HRC has it all: exercise programs for both adults and children, indoor courts for racquet sports, skating, hockey, golf, as well as an outdoor chip trail for walking and running that’s easy on your knees

The Royal Victoria Yacht Club - The Royal Victoria Yacht Club, located in the shelter of Cadboro Bay, gives residents easy access to the water with moorage, cruises, racing events, and stand-up-paddle board and kayak rentals.
